“There are certain queer times and occasions in this strange mixed affair we call life when a man takes this whole universe for a vast practical joke, though the wit thereof he but dimly discerns, and more than suspects that the joke is at nobody's expense but his own.”

― Herman Melville, Moby-Dick

Death in a Nutshell

Once, in a cottage by the sea a mother lay dying, her son, grieving by her side. The son heard a noise on the path and looked out the window to see Death walking up to the cottage. He ran to the door, “I won't let you take her!" he cried. He grabbed a big, thick stick and began beating Death. Again and again his struck Death down and with each blow, Death got smaller and smaller until he was so small the son could hold Death in his hand. He then grabbed half a walnut shell and pushed Death in. He took the other half of the walnut shell, bound the shell together with string and threw it out to sea. His mother woke up feeling much better. "I'm hungry," she said. "I'd like some chicken soup." The son went into the back garden and cut off the head of a chicken but the head just pooped back on. He did this time and time again but each time the same thing happened and he just could not kill the chicken. He picked out some carrots from the vegetable patch but each time the carrots just popped back into the ground. He went to the butcher but there was no meat. He went to the grocers but there was no food - nothing was dying! Finally the son returned to his mother and told her the story. "Son, it's my time to go now," she told him, kindly. "You can't have life without Death. Now go out and release Death from the walnut shell." So the son combed the beach, found the walnut shell and opened it up. Death popped out, bowed to the sun and walked up to the cottage where the mother was waiting for him with open arms.

And that is the story of Death in a Nutshell.
